Kumbh Mela 2015

The greatest and most unparalleled peaceful gathering of humanity on earth is here, once again!

After the stupendously successful Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayag-Allahabad in 2013, the Kumbh is here again – this time at Nashik, Maharashtra State, on the banks of the sacred river Godavari near the jyotirlinga temple at Triyambakeshwar.

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-2Kicked off on July 14, 2015 with a flag hoisting at the Ram Kunda, this extraordinary 45 days event will culminate with a Maha Snan on September 25, 2015 - when millions of people from all over the world will take a dip in the holy river to mark the end of their intense prayers & hopes, unmatched devotion, undying faith and religious fervor - by immersing in and connecting with the combined cosmic energies of Enlightened Masters & deities, past and now, raising their consciousness and taking them closer to their goal of becoming one with the Almighty.

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-3Kumbha Mela has historical, social and above all spiritual significance. It is the oldest festival that happens on planet earth and has been held so for over 12,000 years. There are inscriptions and records to show that historically there have been more than 1000 Kumbh Melas that have taken place.

Come in hoards, participate and experience the Kumbh in the divine company of the rare living incarnation Sri Paramahansa Nithyananda, Mahamandaleshwar of the Maha Nirvani Peetha and founder of the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetha, Bidadi Bangalore – from September 11 – 20, 2015.

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-4-swamiji-processionThe Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in sacred rivers in 4 different places. This massive peaceful congregation of people from all walks of life traverses the journey from their cities, towns and villages to get the spiritual experience of a lifetime, like none other.

It takes place every third year in turns at Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Nasik & Ujjain. An Ardh Kumb Mela (1/2 Mela) is held at Haridwar & Allahabad every 6th year. Every 12 years is the Maha Kumbh, the last of which was held in 2013 in Prayag. The rivers at these four places are the Ganges @ Haridwar, the confluence of Ganges, Yamuna & Saraswati @ Allahabad, the Godavari @ Nashik and the Shipra @ Ujjain.

Historically, the origins of the festival is found in the Bhagavata Purana in the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean of Milk) – where the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) fought fiercely to extract the Amrit Kumbh (Jar of Nectar)to which each claimed ownership over the nectar of immortality - using Maha Meru (Mt. Kailash) the abode of Lord Shiva and Vasuki the Serpent God on which Lord Vishnu reclines, without the permission of either of them!(For a full readon this marvelous legend go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumbh_Mela or watch the documentary by National Geographic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ4aJ5tQQcU

No photography or videography can do justice to actually being at and experiencing the Kumbh Mela in its entirety. What draws people to the Kumbh Mela?

Faith and faith alone bring the multitudes of humanity to the Kumbh from across the globe, to these tiny spaces of ecstatic spiritual awakenings and liberation. There are no advertisements, no arrangements to the event, no advance notices, nothing. Yet millions of devotees will converge into these tiny spaces of not more than 25 odd square kilometers, and over the next 45 days experience an astounding range of emotions and devotion and nearness to the Almighty - partaking of the simple free food that will overflow during this event and experience a minimum monastic existence like the Sadhus who will abound here.

Besides, the Kumbh will give you the opportunity to walk into any tent and listen to discourses on diverse ideologies, participate in the mass feeding of sadhus, women, children and the poor, witness the beauty of the river filled with the flickers of tiny lamps through which devotees will surrender their fervent prayers, hopes and wishes and become engrossed in plays depicting Ramleela & Krisnaleela. Experience the complete surrender of the unabashedly naked, fierce and fearless Nagas whose vows to a life of severe austerity, celibacy and monasticism is legendary. Witness sadhus do the panch agni tapas or 5 fires penance to become immune to the 64 different temperatures of the body, masters over their emotions and become immune to several illnesses and, lots more.

Swamiji’s Personal Message on the Kumbh:

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-5-swamiji

What could be the single-minded faith, devotion, belief and thoughts that draws such humungous number of people to this maddeningly chaotic, intensely personal yet peaceful event every 3 years?

Drawing an analogy from the book Hidden Message in Water by Emoto Masaru, Swamiji tells us to imagine what will happen to the waters of these rivers, that has been flowing fiercely yet peacefully for 1000s of years, and where 10s of million people will transmit and add the energies of their intense faith, devotional fervor, religious belief and thoughts to it when taking prayerful dips or snan in it – it can only become amrit or nectar!

Swamiji says, there is a 2nd more mystical reason why people need to be at the Kumbh Mela – when an Enlightened Master adds his energies to the water by taking a dip in it, then the quality of the water becomes equal to the multitude others who are present there. Along with Swamiji, the spirit of several other existing and past Enlightened Masters like Adi Shankracharya, the Buddha, Ramanujacharya etc. also energize the waters and increase its nectarous, miraculous powers tremendously. This will help to raise the consciousness of the humanity gathered there towards the Supreme Being bringing tremendous positive energy to not only the location of the Kumbh Mela but to the entire planet earth.

Socially, it is the place to gather and share our faith and to feel that we are all one and that we are all going towards the same ultimate experience i.e. God.

Finally, the purpose of the Kumbh Mela is to create a collective positive energy and experience peace, joy, prosperity and bliss.

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-6-swamiji-snaanAs the Mahamandaleshwar of the Maha Nirvani Peetha, Swamiji is a part of the organization that hosts Kumbh Mela and you will get to enter the holy waters following Swamiji and do all the rituals there and experience firsthand the intense cosmic energies of the Avatar himself. Who better to soak in the essence, expanse and depth of the Kumbh than from the divine mouth of Sri Paramahamsa Nithyananda!

Participate by going barefoot to get the complete and full experience of a Hindu -become part of the colorful, music filled Nithyananda brigade lead by Swamiji seated in a Palki(palanquin), the deities being part of the procession to the snan, energize your deities during the snan and chant Har Har Mahadev all the way.

kumbhmela-nasik2015-paramahamsanithyananda-swamiji-mahamandaleshwar-initiationExperience the Shahi Snaan – an ocean of people merging into the river of water and flow of cosmic energy. Be part of the experience of seeing Swamiji in the spirit of the fierce Kalabhairava descend with cosmic energy and spread the spiritual nectar of enlightenment into the water – Kumbh! Feel being Hindu in every pore of your being!

Every activity in the mela is organized to create a quantum leap in the consciousness of those who are there. The congregation of the energies of Enlightened Masters springs forth and blesses the whole humanity present. It happens so magically and so beautifully – you just have to be there to experience it. Watch Swamiji and become a part of the mantras, japas, worships of each of the deities at the Kumbh Ghat, the nithya kirtans, bhajans, the satsangs, the darshans and all such transformative processes and become lost in the fervor of the joy and celebrations it generates.
