Karthikai deepam
The Festival of Devi’s Enlightenment
Karthikai Deepam.... just hearing this name every body’s mind travels to the Holy Temple Town of Arunachala – better known as Tiruvannamalai – where Paramahamsa Nithyananda – the rare living incarnation of our times took a conscious human body.

Legend behind the festival:
There is a legend in the Vedic tradition that Devi – the Cosmic feminine Consciousness – took the human form as Parvati – the daughter of the Himalayan mountains. Parvati did intense tapas(penance) sitting on the hill of Arunachala. On the Krittika star day of Karthikai month – the eight month of the Vedic solar calendar, Devi Parvati experienced an intense light beam within her and experienced her Avataric mission - means she got Enlightened. The intense light beam is nothing but the awakening of the Kundalini energy – the inner potential energy hidden in every human being. As she got Enlightened her individual identity got merged with the Cosmic consciousness – Lord Shiva and she becomes Ardhanarishvara – the Divine form of union of Consciousness and Energy. The light shaft expressed itself as a fire hill which gradually became the hill Arunachala.

The Arunachala hill itself is the form of Lord Shiva. This hill acts as a light house to Enlightened Conscious souls to land on to the planet Earth and constantly attracts Enlightened souls towards itself to help mankind receive the science of enlightenment. The sacred hill indeed is a living Diety.

On the early morning of Karthikai deepm day, a lamp called Bharani Deepam will be lit in the Sanctum of Arunachaleshwara and from that many other lamps will be lit in the temple. This represents the Cosmic Consciousness becoming many to enjoy itself. Later in the evening, all those lamps will be merged again with the main lamp. This symbolises the individual identity getting merged with the Cosmic consciousness.

Every year on the evening of the day of Devi’s Enlightenment, a huge lamp is lit on the top of the Arunachala hill to commemorate Devi’s merging with Shiva and the lamp would glow for days continuously. Just to have darshan of this deepam, every year millions of people throng the temple town, circumambulate the Arunachala hill. This is because on that day the energy level will be extremely high in the Cosmos and especially in an energy field like Arunachala , the energy will be exponentially high. The unique stellar position and the energy field  helps us experience the awakening of Kundalini – which is the essence of spirituality.

All Shiva temples also light the Deepam – the sacred lamp on the same evening celebrating the union of Shiva&Shakthi . On this unique day as a rare happening Paramahamsa Nithyananda will be in Arunachala. On that day the following is the program schedule of Nithyananda Dhyanapeeta in Tiruvannamalai:
